Road Safety and Crime Prevention: Discussion Held at Kutaisi CCE

On October 31, 2012 Kutaisi Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) hosted a public discussion on "Road Safety and Crime Prevention".
Keti Bibileishvili, Deputy Coordinator of Kutaisi CCE chaired the meeting. 10th and 11th grade students from Kutaisi public schools participated in the discussion.
The meeting aimed at informing students on road safety, traffic accidents and crime prevention.
Keti Bibileishvili highlighted the necessity of awareness of children from an early age on road signs and traffic safety rules and briefly introduced statistical data on traffic accidents among young people. "Traffic accidents are the major cause of death among young people of age of 10-24. Every day more than 3000 people, 500 children among them, become victims of traffic accidents. For the next 20 years, in developed countries, death on the road is expected to increase up to 80 %. By 2015 road accidents will be the cause of early deaths among children".
During the meeting students learned about the history of road signs and traffic rules. Small videos on traffic rules and the documentary film "Danger Games" produced by "Partnership on Road Safety" were shown followed by discussion and analysis of the presented materials. Participants also discussed cases of violating of traffic and safety rules declaring the issue to be essential for younger generations.
Students welcomed the discussion of this type. "I liked the film and information on history of road signs. I am glad that meetings on traffic rules are organized and our school students can participate in them." - Demetre Nanobashvili, Kutaisi No:3 Public School student.
